The Creative Process - The Path Ideas Take to Become Real
The Creative Process is how we move our day dreams from a vague concept to definable ideas, and those ideas from scraps of paper, drafts and sketches to reality. Along the way, we employ our Imagination, from whence our ideas come, the Creative Process that guides us, and back through our imaginations again. As a working photographer and writer, I have been using this process for 40 years. As an entrepreneur I have used this process to create two arts organizations, built a conservatory for storytellers and image-makers, establish a world-renown summer school for photographers and filmmakers, and was creative director on two major arts festivals. As an educator I have leading workshops, developed curriculum and lecturing on creativity to visual artists for more than 30 years. As I write this book, I am struggling, as I image are you, with the process all over again.
I have drawing diagram above for the last 20 years, to illustrate the various stages an idea goes through on its way to becoming something that is real and tangible. I’ll get around to explaining those stages in few days, but some of the people in my Senior College course wanted to see the spiral again. The entire slide show I used in this course is at Right.
What It Takes . . . to make an idea real, began as an in-class exercise, listing all the things that stand in our way to being creative, making something that is new, not something that is a reproduction of something that already exists, is known to exist. I’ll have that on here in a day or two. I got side tracked writing a great deal more than the simple list we came up with in class.
Stay Tuned. In the meantime, look at some of the essays I’ve written listed Right.
